The crash is being probed by Quebec’s office of independent investigations, the BEI.

In a statement to media Thursday afternoon, the BEI confirmed the deaths of the pair in the car, which crashed shortly after shots were fired in two separate incidents nearby.
According to reports published by La Presse and the Journal de Montréal on Friday, the two people who died were teenage boys ages 16 and 14. The BEI was not available on Friday to confirm their ages.
Around 5:30 a.m. Thursday, a Montreal police officer, with lights flashing on their cruiser, responded to a 911 call regarding gunshots and dangerous driving, the BEI said.
“The police officer allegedly saw a vehicle travelling dangerously that seemed to match the description of the vehicle in the 911 call.”

The officer lost sight of the vehicle, which a minute later crashed into a tree on the front lawn of a house on St-Zotique St. near 20th Ave.
One man died upon impact of the car into the tree, the office said. The other was taken to a hospital where he was pronounced dead, the BEI wrote.
The BEI investigates whenever death or serious injury occurs during police action.

The BEI also reported that the Sûreté du Québec will take over the investigations into the shootings that precipitated the crash.
In one case, multiple shots were fired at a car from another vehicle as it travelled on Pie-IX Blvd. near Bellechasse St. in the city’s Rosemont district. The 41-year-old driver was struck at least once in the upper body, but police said it did not appear his life was in danger.
The second incident occurred about five minutes later on St-Joseph Blvd. near Henri-Julien Ave. There, the rear window of a car was blown out by gunfire. The 58-year-old driver of that vehicle was not injured.
Pie-IX Blvd. was closed between Beaubien St. and Rosemont Blvd. and St-Joseph Blvd. was closed at Henri-Julien Ave. as investigators examined the scenes.
